What might you expect from a typical couples therapy session?
Our couples therapists are trained in evidence based approaches of working with relationships including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), The Gottman Method, the Couple’s Institute Developmental Model, Relational, and Psychodynamic Therapy. These approaches are experiential and attachment based with an understanding of trauma and how the brain and nervous system works. At the start of couples therapy, we will get to know you and your partner, your relationship history, reasons for coming to therapy, and create goals for you to work on both individually and as a couple. Throughout the therapy, sessions will focus on helping you understand each other better, communicate more effectively, resolve conflicts in healthier ways, build trust, and enhance emotional & physical intimacy. We will also focus on the role the brain and nervous system play in interpersonal dynamics. For instance, how we get activated into fight/flight/freeze responses when triggered and learning ways to shift towards more connection, mutual caring and secure attachment. Our couples therapists use psychotherapy plus coaching, involving a more direct and guided approach, helping you see the changes you are looking for more quickly.

Are you in a relationship where one or both partners identify as neurodiverse? Would you like to work with a therapist who understands counselling and neurobiology?
Neurodiversity affirming couples counselling will support you to explore and embrace your strengths as an individual and in relationship with your partner. We believe that everyone processes information differently and that it is our differences that make us unique. Our therapists will support you in your relationship in ways that are meaningful and helpful to you. The nice thing about relationship counselling is that in addition to couples therapy modalities, we may use a combination of approaches to best suit your needs and personality such as mindfulness, the arts, positive self talk, psycho-education, somatic & mind-body approaches, relaxation & guided imagery, problem solving, self compassion & self care practices, and practical strategies such as learning executive functioning and communication skills. Our therapists have lived experience as an ADHD’er or autistic or have a neurodiverse (ND) family member.
