Evidence based relationship and marriage counselling in toronto

& Online

When did relationships start feeling so complicated?
Many people seek couples therapy when they feel stuck in patterns that are no longer working, communication begins to falter, or intimacy fades even though they still care deeply about one another. A close relationship plays an important role in emotional well-being, home life, parenting, finances, and overall mental health. When a primary relationship feels strained or uncertain, it’s common to feel anxious or unsettled as it can affect every area of life.
At Horizon Therapy, our relationship therapists help you better understand each other, communicate with clarity, and build a partnership that feels supportive and deeply connected. We work with couples across Toronto and Ontario-wide online.

Common Reasons Couples Seek Therapy
In couples therapy, also known as couples counselling or marriage counselling, we support partners who feel stuck in patterns of conflict, disconnection, or uncertainty. Relationship strain is common. In fact, approximately 35 percent of Canadian couples report experiencing at least one significant conflict. Our midtown Toronto and online couples therapists can support you with:
- Emotional Disconnection
- Communicating Without Defensiveness
- Repeating the Same Arguments
- Decisions & Big Life Changes
- Neurodiversity, ADHD, Autism
- Unresolved Conflicts
- Dating Therapy Support
- Polyamory & Open Relationships
- Sex & Intimacy Issues
- Bereavement and Loss
- Loss of Affection & Physical Closeness
- LGBTQ+ Relationships
- Parenting and Co-Parenting
- Infidelity Recovery
- Illness and Health
- Financial and Money Conflict
- Role Imbalances
- Feeling More Like Roomates Than Romantic Partners
On average, couples wait six years before attending therapy. By that time, unhealthy patterns and resentments can feel deeply ingrained. The good news is that research shows structured couples therapy, with commitment from both partners, improves relationship satisfaction in 70 to 80 percent of couples.

Evidence Based Approaches We Offer in Couples Therapy in Toronto
Our relationship therapists draw on an eclectic mix of evidence based approaches to help your relationship grow, improve communication, and rebuild the safety, love, and closeness you both deserve!
The Gottman Method
The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples therapy that helps partners build stronger, healthier relationships. Developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, it focuses on improving communication, managing conflict, increasing intimacy, and fostering friendship and shared meaning. Therapists using this method help couples understand patterns that may be undermining their connection, teach practical skills to handle disagreements constructively, and strengthen emotional closeness. With its proven techniques, the Gottman Method supports couples in creating more trust, respect, and long-lasting connection.
Relational Psychodynamic Therapy
Relational Psychodynamic Couples Therapy helps couples explore how early relational experiences and unconscious patterns influence their current interactions. By focusing on the dynamics between partners in the present moment, this therapy helps uncover hidden emotional needs, attachment patterns, and recurring conflicts. Couples learn to recognize how past experiences shape their communication, reactions, and connection, while developing new ways to relate that are more attuned, empathetic, and mutually satisfying. This approach is particularly effective for couples seeking deeper insight into their relationship dynamics and for fostering lasting emotional intimacy and understanding.
Couple's Institute Developmental Model
The Couples Institute Developmental Model, developed by Dr. Ellyn Bader, is a highly regarded approach in couples therapy that focuses on helping partners understand and grow through the stages of adult development. This model emphasizes how each partner’s personal history, emotional development, and attachment patterns shape the relationship, often creating predictable conflicts. Using this approach, therapists guide couples to develop self-awareness, improve communication, resolve longstanding issues, and strengthen emotional intimacy. Many couples find that the Developmental Model not only helps them navigate challenges but also fosters personal growth and a deeper, more resilient connection. Ideal for couples seeking long-term relationship health, this method is especially effective for those navigating complex dynamics, including identity, life transitions, or neurodiversity.
Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy (PACT)
PACT (Psychobiological Approach to Couple Therapy) is an evidence-based model that helps couples understand how early attachment experiences and nervous system patterns influence their interactions today. Developed by Dr. Stan Tatkin, PACT focuses on creating secure, committed relationships by enhancing awareness, emotional regulation, and attunement between partners. Through this approach, couples learn to recognize triggers, manage conflict safely, and strengthen trust and connection. PACT is particularly effective for couples seeking a deep, relational understanding of their dynamics, improving communication, intimacy, and long-term relationship resilience.
Relational Life Therapy (RLT)
Relational Life Therapy (RLT), developed by Dr. Terry Real, is a powerful approach to couples therapy that helps partners build more authentic, balanced, and connected relationships. RLT focuses on addressing common patterns of dysfunction, including control, withdrawal, and emotional disconnection, while teaching couples how to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts, and create equality in their relationship. This method emphasizes accountability, empathy, and emotional honesty, helping couples strengthen trust and intimacy. Relational Life Therapy is particularly effective for couples who want practical tools to transform long-standing patterns and foster deeper connection and partnership.
Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for couples is a research-backed approach that helps partners strengthen emotional bonds and build lasting connection. Developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, EFT focuses on identifying negative interaction patterns, uncovering underlying emotions, and fostering secure attachment between partners. Through this method, couples learn to communicate their needs safely, repair emotional injuries, and increase trust and intimacy. EFT is especially effective for couples experiencing conflict, disconnection, or attachment challenges, and has been shown to create lasting improvements in relationship satisfaction and emotional closeness.
Trauma Therapy/Self Regulation
We use a mixture of therapies that focus on self-regulation, grounding, and managing emotional or physiological states. Modalities like trauma therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, polyvagal, sensory motor, and mindfulness therapy use nervous system regulation strategies to increase distress tolerance and enhance safety and connection in relationships.
Neurodiversity Affirming Couples Therapy
Neurodiversity affirming Couples Therapy is designed to help relationships where one or both partners have ADHD, autism or identify as neurodivergent. A combination of neuroscience, executive functioning support, and relational dynamics are focused on to help improve communication, manage conflict, strengthen emotional connection, and navigate everyday challenges more effectively. By addressing both the relational and neurodiverse aspects of the partnership, we support relationships to become more secure, harmonious, and resilient.

FAQ About Couples Counselling & Marriage Therapy
What happens in couples or relationship therapy?
You will work with one of our skilled therapists to improve the health and long term well being of your relationship by creating personal growth goals, developing healthy conflict styles, communication skills, and fostering emotional intimacy. Therapy will help you to understand yourself and your partner on deeper levels, improve relationship patterns that are getting in the way of connection, and develop shared goals for your future so you can grow and create the life together you truly desire together.
Do we need to be married or in crisis?
Not at all! People reach out and benefit from relationship counselling at many different stages in their relationships including:
- Dating
- Premarital
- Marriage
- Separation/Divorce
You don’t need to be in a crisis, and couples attend therapy for a wide range of reasons. Couples counselling can help you:
- Build a strong foundation for your relationship and address potential issues with premarital counselling
- Develop a secure, loving, and fulfilling relationship as possible
- Improve communication and conflict styles
- Address a lack of intimacy or desire discrepancy
- Navigate life transitions such as moving in together, marriage, or becoming parents
What if my partner does not want couples therapy?
It’s common for one partner to be hesitant about couples therapy. Even if your partner isn’t ready, you can still benefit from individual support to improve communication, manage conflict, and understand relationship patterns. Gentle conversations, exploring small steps like relationship guides or workshops, and modeling positive changes can sometimes help your partner feel more comfortable with therapy over time. A therapist can work with you to strengthen your connection and provide practical tools for improving your relationship, even if only one partner participates.
Do you offer evening or weekend sessions?
Yes, Horizon Therapy offers appointments during the weekdays, evenings, and on weekends both in person in Toronto and online across Ontario. Please reach out to request the timing you are looking for. Evenings and weekends are the most popular times so at times we may have a waitlist for these. We always suggest that once clients begin therapy, to secure their appointment time annually.
How long does couples therapy take to work?
Couples therapy or marriage counselling generally takes a 12 to 20+ sessions, weekly or bi-weekly, to begin to address unhealthy patterns, improve communication challenges, increase emotional and physical intimacy, and begin to move towards more trust and connection. Some couples attend weekly or bi-weekly sessions for a set period of time, whereas other couples benefit from longer term support with their couples therapist moving eventually to monthly check ins for relationship maintenance.
Do you have therapists experienced in supporting Black couples?
Yes. Our therapist Asante Haughton offers Black couples therapy and is experienced in culturally affirming care. Asante understands how race, culture, and family history shape a relationship, without treating your identity as the problem to be solved.
Can couples therapy save a marriage?
Couples therapy can help save a marriage by improving communication, rebuilding trust, and strengthening emotional connection. Evidence-based approaches like Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method have been shown to significantly increase relationship satisfaction, with many couples experiencing lasting positive change. Even if one partner is hesitant, therapy can help the willing partner learn strategies to reduce conflict and foster closeness, creating a path for repairing and improving the marriage.
Is in person or online therapy better for couples?
It depends on what feels best for you as a couple. Research shows both are equally transformational however it is a personal call as to which is more comfortable to you. Sometimes it is difficult for both persons to attend in person, and if this is the case, online may be more convenient and preferrable. If you feel drawn to sitting in the room with your therapist and getting out of your home, then in person couples counselling in Toronto may be better.
Does couples therapy help infidelity and betrayal?
What about if there has been infidelity? Infidelity can create a profound rupture in trust and emotional safety. Couples counselling provides a structured, supportive space to understand how this occurred and process the impact of the betrayal, including shock, grief, anger, and confusion. This work allows both partners to slow things down, make sense of what happened, and feel heard without escalating conflict.
Therapy also focuses on accountability, transparency, and rebuilding trust over time. Together, we explore what moving forward might look like, whether that involves repairing the relationship, redefining boundaries, or clarifying next steps. With care, honesty, and guided support, many couples find that working through infidelity can lead to deeper understanding, clearer communication, and a more resilient, connected relationship.
Do you offer sex therapy and help with intimacy?
Sex therapy is a type of talk therapy that helps individuals and couples improve sexual communication and understanding, enhance pleasure and passion, build intimacy and connection, address sexual concerns, anxieties, and promote overall sexual well being.
It can address issues such as boredom, infidelity, mismatched differences in desire, rapid/delayed ejaculation, pain during sex, difficulties with arousal or orgasm, or navigating ethical non monogamy, kink, polyamory, and other relationship structures. These experiences are more common than many couples realize, and they are often deeply tied to emotional safety, stress, and relational dynamics rather than individual failure.
Life transitions such as pregnancy, postpartum changes, parenting, menopause, illness, stress, and ageing can all have a significant impact on sexual intimacy. Ongoing resentment, unresolved conflict, and unhelpful communication patterns can also quietly erode desire and connection over time.
Therapy involves a combination of assessment, psycho-education, a pleasure model and sensate focus, and relationship & intimate communication skill building. We focus on helping couples understand the underlying patterns affecting intimacy, rebuild trust and emotional closeness, and develop healthier ways of communicating needs and boundaries. By strengthening emotional connection and safety, many couples find that sexual intimacy can shift in meaningful and sustainable ways.
