Evidence based EFT couples therapy in toronto and online across ontario
Our couples therapists at Horizon Therapy Toronto use a mix of evidence based couples modalities including Emotionally Focused Therapy, sometimes called EFT or Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, which is an approach that helps partners address a variety of relationship challenges and strengthen emotional connection. EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980’s with extensive research showing that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and about 90% experience significant improvement.
What is EFT Couples Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples (EFT) is a shorter term structured and experiential counselling approach of up to twenty sessions. EFT couples therapy is based on attachment science, is grounded in present moment experiences, and works with deeper emotions and the needs behind one’s interactions – influencing how you communicate and understand each other.
At Horizon Therapy in Toronto, our EFT therapists help you better understand each other, communicate with clarity and compassion, and build a partnership that feels safe, supportive, and deeply connected.

How Does EFT for Couples Work?
In Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, the therapist pays close attention to how partners interact and helps make sense of the patterns that play out both in session and at home. Together, you explore how these communication cycles may be shaped by deeper emotional needs and past experiences.
The therapist facilitates structured bonding conversations that allow each partner to share vulnerabilities in a safe and supported way. You will learn how to respond to one another with greater empathy, openness, and reassurance, strengthening feelings of safety and connection.
As part of this process, your therapist may gently guide you to examine emotional wounds or sensitivities that influence your reactions. Often, underlying feelings such as fear, hurt, or longing are driving conflict without being fully understood. By bringing these emotions into awareness and learning how to express them clearly, couples can shift from blame and defensiveness toward closeness and security.
The Three Main Stages of EFCT:
De-escalation of Negative Cycles (Steps 1 to 4)
In this first stage, the therapy helps couples begin to identify negative cycles of communication as well as attachment issues. Couples are guided in a safe way to access underlying attachment emotions to understand what is happening in their relationship dynamic on an emotional level. Problems begin to be reframed, including attachment needs and also fears.
Restructuring the Bond and Change (Steps 5 to 7)
In this stage of EFCT, the goal is to help couples shift the way they relate to each other. Partners who tend to withdraw become more engaged and confident in expressing their needs, while those who respond with anger or criticism begin to take emotional risks by showing vulnerability. As trust and understanding grow, couples learn to respond to each other in ways that foster connection rather than conflict, creating a deeper sense of safety and emotional intimacy. These changes help restructure attachment patterns, strengthen the bond between partners, and support a healthier, more secure relationship overall.
Consolidation and Integration (Steps 8 & 9)
As couples progress in EFT, new ways of responding to old challenges begin to emerge, allowing longstanding conflicts to be addressed more effectively. Positive patterns of attachment become reinforced, and partners start to experience their relationship in a more secure and connected way. Over time, these shifts help solidify healthier communication cycles, deepen trust, and create a more stable, resilient bond that supports both partners’ emotional needs.

What's Possible Through Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally focused therapy can help reduce automatic, unhealthy reactions and dynamics that are harmful for relationships. Couples can get the following benefits from EFCT:
Healthier Emotional Functioning:
EFT provides a language for healthy security and dependency between partners and looks at significant moments that define an adult love relationship. One of the primary goals of the EFT approach is to expand and re-organize the emotional responses and relationship repertoire of the couple.
Stronger Bonds:
EFT is based on attachment theory, which suggests that attachments between people often provide a buffer against stress by offering a safe place and way to get comfort, rest and security.
Improved Interpersonal Understanding:
EFT helps people become more aware of their partner’s needs. Because of this awareness, they learn to listen, respond and discuss problems from a place of empathy – instead of defensiveness or anger.

FAQ About EFT Couples Therapy
What happens in a typical EFT session?
A typical EFT session is collaborative and structured. It often includes:
- First meeting all together to get a picture of what’s been happening within your relationship.
- Meeting with each partner individually
- The remainder of sessions are generally all together again.
- Helping partners express what they’re feeling and needing, often things that are hard to say on their own.
- Understanding negative cycles you’re stuck in, and how to get out of this pattern.
- Together you’ll find more positive, supportive patterns where you feel seen, heard and understood by each other.
Are there any limitations or risks of EFT?
Like all forms of couples therapy, EFT requires both partners to be willing to participate honestly and engage in emotional exploration. The process can sometimes feel vulnerable or uncomfortable, especially when discussing painful experiences or unmet needs. In situations involving ongoing abuse, active addiction, or serious safety concerns, additional supports or alternative interventions may be recommended before beginning couples work. A qualified therapist will assess whether EFT is appropriate and ensure the approach aligns with the couple’s specific circumstances.
How long does EFT take to work?
The length of EFT varies depending on the couple and the complexity of the challenges involved. Some couples begin noticing meaningful shifts within a few months, while others benefit from longer-term support. Research suggests that structured Emotionally Focused Therapy leads to significant improvement in relationship satisfaction for many couples when both partners are committed to the process.
How does EFT improve communication for couples?
In EFT, communication is explored within the context of emotional connection. Many couples get stuck in repeating patterns, such as one partner withdrawing while the other pursues. EFT helps partners slow down these interactions, identify underlying feelings, and express needs in a clearer, more vulnerable way. As emotional safety grows, communication becomes less reactive and more supportive.
Is EFT effective for high conflict relationships?
Yes. EFT is specifically designed to address patterns of intense conflict, emotional disconnection, and recurring arguments. By focusing on the underlying attachment dynamics rather than just the content of disagreements, couples often experience deeper and more lasting change than with skills-based approaches alone.
Why do I panic when my partner pulls away emotionally?
Feeling panic or anxiety when a partner withdraws is common in couples with attachment-related dynamics. Your nervous system perceives emotional distance as a threat to the relationship, triggering strong feelings of fear, worry, or urgency. EFT helps couples recognize these patterns, understand each partner’s emotional needs, and create safe ways to reconnect so panic responses decrease over time.
Why do I shut down during relationship conflict?
Shutting down is often a protective response to emotional overwhelm or fear of rejection. When conflict feels threatening, some people disconnect to avoid feeling hurt, angry, or overwhelmed. In EFT, therapists help couples identify triggers, express emotions safely, and respond to each other with curiosity and compassion, allowing both partners to stay engaged even during difficult conversations.
Why do couples fight more when they actually love each other deeply?
Intense conflict in loving relationships often reflects emotional investment rather than lack of care. Couples who deeply care about each other are more sensitive to perceived threats, unmet needs, or attachment insecurities, which can escalate arguments. EFT teaches couples how to understand underlying emotions, communicate needs safely, and transform conflict into connection rather than disconnection.
