Executive Burnout Therapy in Toronto
Executive burnout therapy in Toronto and across Ontario to help senior leaders recover their capacity without stepping away from the role.
You're the Person Everyone Else Leans On. Who Do You Lean On?
You’re the one people come to when something’s on fire. The board expects composure. Your team expects certainty. Your family expects you to be present the moment you walk in the door, even though some part of you never really left the last meeting. Somewhere in all of that, the question of who’s actually holding you up stopped getting asked.
At Horizon Therapy, we offer executive burnout therapy in Toronto, or online across Ontario, for CEOs, founders, partners, and senior leaders whose exhaustion has gone past what a vacation or a better calendar can fix.

Struggling with Executive Burnout?
A recent leadership assessment covered by Benefits Canada found that only 18% of leaders scored high in stress tolerance, despite stress tolerance being one of the traits their roles demand most. Burnout also carries a real cost: a Canada Life survey found burnout-related losses can exceed $3.4 million a year for a company of 500 employees. Extend that logic upward, and the cost of a burned-out decision-maker at the top is rarely just personal.
If what you’re managing is closer to constant achievement anxiety and self-doubt than to depletion, our Therapy for High Achievers page may describe your experience more precisely than this one does. Executive burnout, by contrast, is what happens when the tank itself is empty, not just under pressure to perform.

What Executive Burnout Looks Like at the Top
Burnout in senior leadership rarely looks like falling apart. It looks like still functioning, at a cost that’s mostly invisible to everyone below you:
- Sitting through a high-stakes meeting fully composed on the outside while feeling completely flat on the inside
- Checking your phone through dinner, a school event, or a vacation because stepping away for real feels unsafe
- Decision fatigue by mid-afternoon, second-guessing calls you'd normally make without hesitation
- Holding onto tasks you should delegate because delegating feels riskier than doing it yourself, again
- A short fuse with the people closest to you that never surfaces in front of your team or your board
- A quiet, persistent fear that admitting any of this puts your position, or your reputation, at risk
Therapy supports clarity, boundaries, and sustainable ways of working without constant depletion. It can help reduce internal pressure and create realistic separation between work identity and personal life.

What Makes Burnout Different
in the C-Suite?
Burnout for a senior leader carries pressures that don’t show up the same way further down an organization. Boards and shareholders expect steady performance regardless of what’s happening underneath it. Every decision carries visible consequences, for the business and often for your own name. And there’s frequently no one at your level to be candid with. A peer would mean a competitor, a report would mean exposure, and a partner at home can only absorb so much of what you’re carrying.
Senior leadership burnout also tends to spike around specific pressure points including a merger or acquisition, a succession decision, a public crisis, or a stretch of managing other people’s fear during an organizational shakeup. Boardroom stress therapy has to account for the fact that you’re rarely allowed to look as depleted as you feel.

What Causes Executive Burnout?
Executive burnout is often caused by one or more of the following:
- Constant, high-stakes decision-making. Every choice at your level carries weight, and there's rarely a moment where you're not the one making one.
- The expectation of being permanently "on." Being reachable at all hours, for your team, your board, your clients, erodes the recovery time that even a demanding job needs to sustain.
- The isolation of command. Leadership often means being the container for everyone else's stress without a comparable outlet for your own.
- Crisis and change leadership. Layoffs, restructuring, and public-facing crises ask you to project stability while personally absorbing the impact of the decision.
- Suppressing your own reaction to protect the organization. Years of managing your visible response to bad news take a cumulative toll that doesn't show up until it does.

Mental Health: Why It's Different
From General Workplace Stress
If you manage a team but the stress you’re carrying is more about workload and ambition than board-level accountability, our Therapy for High Achievers page may be the better starting point. If it’s less about your career specifically and more about exhaustion in general, our Stress & Burnout Therapy page covers that territory. This page is specifically for the pressures that come with being the final decision-maker: C-suite roles, boards, founders, and senior partners carrying accountability that doesn’t get shared.

How Executive Stress Management Therapy Works at Horizon
We tailor therapy to your unique needs, combining a variety of evidence-based approaches that support both your emotional well-being and your physical health. These methods help you better understand your anxiety, regulate your nervous system, and develop sustainable coping strategies:
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) helps identify the specific thought patterns behind the pressure to be endlessly available and endlessly composed, and builds more sustainable ways of responding to high-stakes moments.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
ACT works with the fear that slowing down signals weakness, so you can make room for rest without it feeling like a threat to your position.
Relational Psychodynamic Therapy
Relational Psychodynamic Therapy looks at the origins of beliefs from early experiences in life such as “I have to carry everything alone” first took hold, so they stop running the show by default.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
DBT builds concrete skills for managing the emotional intensity of a crisis, a bad quarter, or a difficult board conversation without it bleeding into every other part of your life.
Stress Management & Neuropsychotherapy
These approaches address the physical toll directly: a nervous system stuck in a heightened state after years of high-stakes decisions, and the sleep, focus, and health consequences that follow.
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
MBSR teaches you to learn to bring your awareness more into the present moment and the tasks at hand versus worrying about past decisions or future deadlines.
How Does Therapy Help
Executive Burnout?
Executive wellness counselling at Horizon isn’t about convincing you to want less responsibility. It’s about building a version of leadership you can actually sustain: recognizing the earliest signs of depletion instead of the latest ones, delegating without treating it as a failure, setting boundaries with your board or team that hold, and rebuilding an identity that exists outside the role, so retirement, transition, or a bad quarter doesn’t feel like losing yourself entirely.

FAQ's
Do I need to step back from my role to recover from burnout?
Not necessarily. Most of our executive clients continue working throughout therapy. The goal is building sustainable capacity within your role, though for some leaders, a temporary step back is part of a realistic recovery plan, and we can talk through what that would look like if it’s relevant to you.
How do you handle confidentiality for well-known executives?
We take this seriously: flexible scheduling to avoid a busy waiting room, discretion in how appointments are booked and billed, and no expectation that you’ll be recognized or discussed outside the room. If privacy is a specific concern, it’s worth raising directly in your first session.
Is this different from executive coaching?
Yes. Coaching typically focuses on performance and leadership skills. This addresses what’s underneath the performance, the exhaustion, isolation, and pressure driving it, and can be used alongside a coach if that’s useful to you.
Can therapy help if I genuinely can't take time off right now?
Yes. Most of our executive clients aren’t in a position to step away, which is exactly why we focus on sustainable strategies you can use while still fully in the role, rather than recovery plans that assume you can disappear for a month.
Will I need to take time off work to recover from burnout?
Not necessarily. While some people benefit from time off, burnout therapy can also support recovery while you continue working. The focus is on helping you reduce ongoing strain, build sustainable boundaries, and shift patterns that contribute to burnout, so that your work feels more manageable over time.
I work on Bay Street, and burnout feels like the baseline here. How do I know this is actually a problem and not just the job?
Bay Street’s culture normalizes a pace that would be a red flag almost anywhere else, which makes it genuinely hard to tell the difference from the inside. If you can’t picture what it would feel like to fully switch off, even on a slow weekend, that’s usually not “just the job” anymore. That’s worth a conversation regardless of what everyone around you is treating as normal.
Will taking time for therapy affect how I'm seen at my firm?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear from downtown Toronto executive clients, and it’s exactly why discretion matters so much in how we work with you. Flexible scheduling, no visible waiting room, and no record that identifies why you’re stepping out for an hour. It is completely your choice if you colleagues or not at work.
My job requires me to be reachable through evenings, client dinners, and networking events. How realistic is therapy on top of that?
This is the norm for most of our executive clients, not the exception, so sessions can be built around your schedule with early mornings, evenings, or virtual sessions you can do from your office between meetings.
Is it normal to feel resentful of a job that pays well and looks successful from the outside?
Very. Compensation and prestige don’t cancel out exhaustion, and feeling both grateful for what the role has given you and resentful of what it’s costing you isn’t a contradiction, it’s actually one of the most common things we hear from senior Toronto executives in this work.
My partner says I've changed since I moved into this role. Is that burnout, or something else?
People closer to us often notice the shift, shorter patience, less presence, a flatness that wasn’t there before, well before we’re willing to name it ourselves. Burnout is one likely explanation, but the more useful question is what’s changed for you, not just whether it fits a definition.
Can you help if my burnout was triggered by a specific event (a round of layoffs I had to deliver, a failed deal, or a bad audit)?
Yes. A lot of executive burnout doesn’t build slowly, it lands hard after a specific event you were expected to manage calmly in the moment, with no real space afterward to process what it cost you. That’s common among Toronto’s finance, legal, and corporate leadership clients, and it’s often exactly where we start.
Executive burnout also tends to travel with other patterns. If perfectionism is doing more of the driving than the job itself, perfectionism therapy may address it more directly. If saying no to your board, your team, or your own family feels harder than it should regardless of your title, people pleasing therapy can name that pattern on its own. And if anxiety rather than exhaustion is the more dominant thread underneath everything, anxiety therapy may be the more precise starting point.
Corporate Executive Therapy in Toronto: What to Expect
We work with senior leaders regularly and take the added discretion this level of visibility requires seriously: flexible scheduling around demanding calendars, no expectation of being seen in a busy waiting room, and confidentiality that extends to how sessions are booked and billed. We offer in-person therapy sessions at our Midtown location at 455 Avenue Road, along with online therapy across Ontario for leaders whose schedules don’t allow for a fixed weekly commute.
Our office is closest to the Yonge-University subway line. We work with senior leaders across the city, including those commuting from the Financial District, Yorkville, Rosedale, Forest Hill, Leaside, and the Bay Street corridor.
