Match with a therapist
Our family life is fundamental to our emotional health and personal growth.
A family could include teen or adult children and their parents, siblings, step-parents and others who care about each other. In therapy, family members are able to explore difficult thoughts and feelings, to make space for each other’s differing experiences and needs, to build on strengths, and to make beneficial changes to support relationships.
It takes courage to do family therapy.
We are not given a handbook on how to have honest and open conversations and manage challenging circumstances or conflict. Your therapist will help you understand specific relational patterns in your family interactions and the role intergenerational trauma may play.
Through family therapy you will:
- Better understand one another
- Identify the impact of your behaviours
- Increase empathy and compassion
- Learn new ways of listening and responding
- Improve interpersonal problem solving
- Learn emotional self regulation
- Create a shared vision for your relationship and future
Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT)
For families with teens or young adults, we may recommend the Attachment Based Family Therapy Model (ABFT). Attachment Based Family Therapy assists with improving the mental health of adolescents and young adults experiencing depression or conflict with caregivers. ABFT is an empirically based, attachment, and trauma informed practice. This emotion focused model of therapy focuses on rebuilding a sense of connection and trust, improving communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and repairing ruptures in the child and parent relationship/s. A family commitment of between 14-20 sessions is required.

Questions about Family Therapy
Why is my family member so angry or difficult to be around?
People express anger for many reasons: stress, past hurts, feeling unheard, or difficulty managing emotions. Their anger is usually about their own feelings, not about you personally. Staying calm, setting boundaries, and listening without judgment can help you respond without escalating conflict.
How can I make my family member understand me?
Communication is key, but understanding often takes time. Use clear “I” statements like, “I feel hurt when…” instead of blaming. Listen actively to their perspective too. Sometimes therapy or family counseling helps everyone learn to express themselves in ways that are heard and respected.
What happens in family therapy?
In family therapy, multiple family members attend sessions together and the focus is on reducing overall distress and improving relationships between members. Therapy helps families understand relational and communication patterns, and how individual behaviours may impact others. It involves a collaboration process where families explore dynamics, strengths, and challenges and develop healthier coping strategies and ways of interacting.
What if one family member refuses to attend?
This is not an uncommon situation and is still okay! An individual may not be willing to participate because of a:
- Fear of conflict
- Worry of being blamed or targeted as the problem
- Discomfort with the idea of therapy or talking about feelings
- Decision to take a break from interacting with family
- Mental health or addiction issues
The good news is that healing and transformation can happen in a family system when just some members begin to explore issues, gain deeper understanding, and learn healthier ways of relating.
Will the therapist take sides?
A therapist’s role is not to take sides or judge who is ‘right or wrong’. In family therapy, our therapists focus on facilitating improved communication, and developing greater understanding of one another. Therapists help families learn about and create goals to improve functioning, and may direct and support members to strengthen these goals. Sometimes when therapists do this or are paying attention to one family member at a time, it may feel like they are taking sides. However, our therapists are trained to support all members and strengthen the family unit as a whole.
Why do I feel so hurt or scared around them?
Feeling hurt, scared, or anxious around a family member is normal if interactions are tense or unpredictable. Your feelings are valid—they signal that your emotional needs matter. Reflecting on your boundaries and seeking support from a therapist, friend, or support group can help you cope and feel safer.
. Am I overreacting or being too sensitive?
Your feelings are real and valid, even if others respond differently. Family dynamics can be intense, and it’s common to doubt yourself. Reflect on the situation honestly, but trust your instincts—your emotional experience matters, and it’s okay to seek support or distance if needed.
. How can I stop feeling guilty for setting boundaries?
Setting boundaries is healthy and necessary for emotional wellbeing. Feeling guilty often comes from family patterns or expectations. Remember, saying no or stepping back doesn’t make you a bad family member—it helps maintain a respectful and safe relationship for both people.
. How often should we attend and for how long?
A consistent therapy schedule is most effective attending once a week or bi-weekly. The length of family therapy varies widely based on the issues being addressed and the commitment from the family members. Family therapy can last anywhere from a few sessions to several months to a few years, depending on the complexity of the issues and progress made during therapy. For Attachment Based Family Therapy with caregivers and youth, a minimum of 14- 20 sessions is required.
. Can our relationship improve, or is this just how they are?
Change is possible, but it requires effort from both sides. Some family members are willing to work on communication, therapy, and understanding, while others may struggle with self-awareness. Focus on what you can control: your responses, your boundaries, and your self-care. Family counseling can also provide a guided space to repair and rebuild relationships.
