Frequently Asked Questions
Who does Horizon Therapy support?
Horizon therapists work with individuals, couples, and families. We see clients from a wide range of backgrounds, sexual orientations, and genders. Our team works with clients from different stages of life including youth, adults, and seniors.
How do I decide which therapist to work with?
You can find information about our therapists on Our Team’s Bios, and see who resonates with you based on their description and availability. You are also always welcome to fill out our Contact Form or email us and we will will be happy to talk with you and help match you with the best therapist for your needs. Most of our therapists also offer a free consultation so that you can determine if they are a good fit for you.
What training and education do your therapists have?
Our therapists have a variety of training and educational backgrounds ranging from a Master of Social Work, Registered Psychotherapist, or graduate of a Psychotherapy Training Program. Our team is committed to ongoing professional development and training in specific modalities based on their interest such as EFT, ACT, PACT, CBT, Psychodynamic, Mindfulness, Buddhist, and Relational therapy. Please read individual bios for therapist specific training, experience, and education.
What happens in a first session?
In the first therapy session, you will begin to build a relationship with your therapist, discuss what is bothering you, what you are wanting support with, collaboratively create goals, and begin to develop a sense of safety together. If you have questions, these are also welcomed by your therapist.
By the end of the first session, your therapist will clarify with you what the focus of your work could be, and establish what frequency of sessions will be most helpful.
Do you offer in person and online therapy sessions?
Yes, Horizon Therapy offers both in person therapy at 455 Avenue Road and St. Clair, as well as online therapy across Ontario. Please check Our Team Bios to see which therapists are available for online vs in person sessions.
Will my sessions be confidential?
Yes, what we discuss in your therapy sessions is confidential except in a few situations:
- Your therapist believes you are at imminent or serious risk to harm yourself or others.
- Your therapist believes a child or vulnerable adult is at risk of or is being abused.
- If we are officially subpoenaed in a court case.
How many sessions will I require?
Many clients say they feel some degree of relief in the first few sessions as they begin to open up, share, and build a safe space to work on their challenges with their therapist.
The length of time that you are in therapy will vary depending on your issues, and personal goals. Many individual clients work with their therapist for anywhere between 1 -3 years in order to make meaningful and long lasting change. Some clients reach out for support to work through a recent situational event that may get resolved in a shorter, 10 – 12 session timeframe. For couples we recommend that you attend for a minimum of between 12 – 20 sessions, although many couples find attending longer term beneficial.
As you go along, you and your therapist can talk about your progress and ensure that you come up with a plan that works best for you.
How often should I attend therapy?
We recommend attending weekly or bi-weekly sessions for the duration of your therapy if possible. The research shows that this frequency leads to the best results for clients who are in active treatment. If you are wrapping up therapy, and want to stay connected to your therapist, you can discuss the possibility of scheduling monthly sessions to check in, and ensure you are staying on track of your personal goals.
What if I need to contact my therapist between sessions?
You can contact your therapist between sessions by email at: therapistfirstname@horizontherapy.ca. Contact with therapists between sessions should be regarding availability and setting up sessions, rather than communicating sensitive information. If you require an additional session before your next scheduled session, your therapist will do their best to book an additional session for you based on their availability.
What are your therapy session fees?
Fees vary depending on which therapist you see and whether you are seeking individual, couples, or family therapy. Rates range from $175 for individual sessions to between $200 to $250 for couples or family sessions. Sessions are 50 minutes, unless otherwise arranged with your therapist.
We also have an Affordable Therapy Program that runs from September to April, where supervised MSW interns offer low cost therapy for $120 for individuals, and $170 for couples.
How do I pay for my therapy sessions?
Payment is taken by credit card on the Jane App which is our secure online booking platform. When filling out our intake and consent form, you will be prompted to enter your credit card information. Your therapist will take payment following each session, and send you a receipt by email that you can save for tax purposes or submit to an insurance plan.
What is your cancellation policy?
Horizon Therapy’s cancellation policy is 48 business hours. This means that we require 48 business hours notice to cancel your session, otherwise for any missed or cancelled appointments, we fully charge for these sessions.
