Are you feeling more overwhelmed, stressed or stuck recently?
We get it, life’s not always easy, and sometimes it just gets to be too much. Dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and life transitions can be overwhelming and isolating.
Speaking with a therapist can make a real difference.
Online Therapy Works Just Like In Person Therapy, Except We Meet Online.
Online sessions are booked on a video conferencing platform Horizon Therapy utilizes called Jane App. You will login each session to this confidential platform for your video appointment with your therapist. Jane App is equipped with software that complies with healthcare standards for security and privacy in Canada.
Just like in person therapy, virtual therapy can support you to receive the help you need to explore, grow, heal, offering more meaning and fulfillment in your life.
The Benefits of Online Therapy
- Accessibility - Virtual therapy ensures accessibility for people in more rural or remote areas as well as for those with limited mobility. If you live far from the therapist’s office or have physical limitations, you can still receive the help you need.
- Anonymous and Private - You don’t risk bumping into anyone on your way to or from your therapy sessions, offering you more privacy and anonymity.
- Comfortable - You may feel more at ease sharing personal issues from the comfort of your own home as having a familiar environment may help you relax and open up.
- Continuity - Virtual therapy can offer consistent support. You have the option to see your therapist when on a vacation or even a work trip. If you usually see your therapist in person, it allows for the option to schedule a virtual session, if you are at times unable to attend in person.
- Flexible Scheduling - With virtual therapy, you can schedule appointments at more flexible times than you might be able to with in person therapy which would entail extra time due to travel. Perhaps for instance, you might schedule during a break or lunch time, and picking times that work best for you.
- Saves Time and Stress - Life is busy and with virtual therapy you save travel time driving to and from the therapist’s office, not to mention the parking!

Questions You May Have About Online Counselling
Is online therapy as effective as in person therapy?
Yes! Connecting online with a therapist has been shown to be just as effective as meeting in person, in terms of addressing mental health issues and life challenges. The most important predictor of success of online therapy is the therapeutic relationship, which is the same predictor in person therapy. Online therapy can address a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, grief, and relationship issues and is preferred by many due to its convenience and being able to participate from the comfort of your own home.
Is online therapy confidential and private?
Yes, we use the online counselling platform called Jane App which is HIPAA and PIPEDA compliant and uses strong encryption and security measures and complies with healthcare standards for security and privacy in Canada.
Is it normal to feel awkward talking to a therapist online at first?
It depends. Many people feel nervous or awkward during their first therapy session, whether it is online or in person. Virtual therapy can feel different from in-person sessions, and it may take time to get comfortable with the technology and the new format. This is completely normal. Most clients find that with a few sessions, they quickly adjust to being online. Many prefer the comfortability and convenience of being at home which helps them feel safe. If you find you are not comfortable after a few sessions, speak with your therapist to see if they offer in person sessions as well.
Do people open up as much in virtual therapy?
Absolutely. Many clients actually feel more comfortable sharing personal thoughts and feelings from the safety of their own home. While it might feel unusual at first, online therapy allows for a private, safe space where clients can build trust with their therapist and explore difficult emotions just as effectively as in-person sessions.
What happens if I get emotional during an online therapy session?
Getting emotional during a session is completely normal and a healthy part of processing feelings. Your therapist is trained to provide support, help you regulate emotions, and ensure you feel safe even virtually. If you feel overwhelmed, your therapist may use techniques such as grounding exercises, guided breathing, or pausing the session can help manage strong emotions, and you can continue exploring your feelings at your own pace.
Will my insurance company cover online counselling?
Insurance companies generally cover both online and in person sessions and provide the same amount of benefit coverage for both. It is always best to check with your insurance company though about the type of coverage they provide.
What if my internet or tech issues interrupt a session?
Most therapists have backup plans, such as switching to a different platform or a phone session, rescheduling, or reconnecting quickly online. Temporary interruptions don’t affect therapy progress, and you and your therapist can work together to maintain continuity and safety.
Can I build a real connection with my therapist online?
Yes. Many clients find that strong therapeutic connections can develop virtually. Emotional safety, trust, and empathy aren’t limited by physical presence. Therapists are trained to engage deeply online, and many clients report feeling heard, understood, and supported just as much as in in-person sessions.
Is it normal to feel more relaxed at home but also distracted during online therapy?
Being in your own space can make some people feel safer and more open, but it can also bring distractions. Therapists help clients manage this by setting boundaries, creating a quiet space, and using grounding techniques. It might mean turning off notifications on your computer or ipad, sitting away from the front door, and letting others in the household know not to interrupt you during your session, even though you are home.
Can online therapy treat all mental health issues?
Online therapy may not be suitable for more complex mental health issues such as schizophrenia, psychosis, or for persons with severe suicidal thoughts.
