Breaking free from trauma’s tight grip of the past on your present.
When you constantly relive painful past experiences, it can feel like trauma is the one controlling your life instead of you. Often this can leave you feeling isolated and overwhelmed.
It doesn’t have to be this way.
Trauma can lead to struggles with:
- Addictions - turning to substances such as alcohol or drugs to cope with the emotional pain of trauma.
- Anxiety - an ongoing sense of worry, fear, or dread in day to day life.
- Avoidance - avoiding places, people, or situations that are reminders of the trauma.
- Depression - persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of pleasure or interest in activities.
- Dissociation - disconnecting from thoughts or feelings in order to cope with overwhelming emotions.
- Sleep Issues - insomnia and nightmares impacting one’s physical and emotional well being.
- Emotional Dysregulation - finding it difficult to manage emotions and having sudden outbursts of feelings such as anger, anxiety, and sadness.
- Hyperarousal - constantly being on alert and scanning for danger which increases stress, and makes it difficult to relax and feel safe.
- Low Self Esteem - difficulty finding one’s own strengths and self worth.
- Physical Symptoms - experiencing trauma’s effects in the body through fatigue, chronic pain, and digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Relationship Issues - struggles with trust, communication, and intimacy.
If you’re experiencing any of these challenges, talking to a trauma focused therapist can make a real difference.

Benefits Of Trauma Therapy
Rebuild Safety in Yourself
Trauma activates survival mode and keeps us in a state of fight, flight, or freeze, making it difficult to feel relaxed or safe. At your own pace, and with the support of a skilled and compassionate therapist, you will begin to explore the emotional, physical, and relational impact of trauma, its meaning to you, and support your nervous system with the aim of re-establishing a sense of safety in yourself and in the world.
Understand Your Emotions
Trauma can leave one feeling overwhelmed by intense emotions or numbed out. Therapy can help you learn to manage triggers, understand or reconnect to emotions in a safe way, and help you navigate them with greater ease.
Repair Relationships
Trauma can impact how we feel in relationship and our level of safety and trust with others. Together, we can work on repairing old attachment injuries, improve boundaries, communication of your needs, and develop healthier more secure connections in your present day life.
Manage Your Thoughts
Trauma can lead to deep seated negative beliefs – “I’m a failure” or “no-one is trustworthy”. Trauma therapy can help you re-evaluate your thoughts and work through narratives that keep you locked in the past so you can begin to relate to yourself with more perspective and compassion.
Process and Integrate Traumatic Experiences
It’s a myth that you need to remember or re-experience every painful detail of trauma to heal and move forward. Therapy will be tailored to your specific personality and needs, and provide a respectful approach to process your trauma, regain a sense of control, and soften its emotional grip on you and your present day life.
Rediscover Peace and Hope
Trauma’s grip on the past can make it difficult to imagine ever feeling a sense of freedom from the pain. As you courageously begin to take steps toward your own healing, you will begin to start experiencing simple pleasures from the past again, perhaps new interests, having more moments of peace, contentment, and hope.
Trauma Therapy Approaches
Mindfulness Based Therapy
Mindfulness based therapies are experiential in nature and help you to be more in the present moment, developing attitudes of non judgment, curiosity, trust, patience, allowing, non striving, and beginner’s mind. Sessions may involve meditation, body scans, gentle movement, and visualization.
Relational Psychodynamic Therapy
Based on the principles that emotional well being depends on having satisfying and mutual relationships with others, and that emotional distress and trauma, often stems from past or present negative relational experiences. The process of healing can happen through the interpersonal therapeutic interaction, where a sense of self is strengthened, increasing confidence and overall well-being.
Relaxation and Guided Imagery
Working with the breath, progressive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery can support you to regulate your nervous system, reduce tension in the body, and calm the spirit.
Internal Family Systems (IFS)
IFS focuses on understanding and relating to one’s ‘parts’ that carry the burdens of trauma. A compassionate and curious attitude is encouraged to explore how ‘parts’ were developed in order to protect oneself during trauma, and by restoring leadership and trust in core Self in order to move towards healing and transformation.
Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT)
EFT helps clients become more aware of their emotions and the impact of trauma on their identity. Clients learn to articulate their feelings related to traumatic events, manage overwhelming feelings, strengthen relationships and regain a sense of control.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Certain thought patterns and behaviours can contribute to the lasting impacts of trauma and CBT offers strategies such as cognitive restructuring, behavioural activation, exposure therapy, and changing negative self talk.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) -
ACT encourages acknowledgment and acceptance of difficult thoughts and feelings rather than trying to avoid them which is a common response to trauma. It promotes psychological flexibility and empowerment by identifying core values and taking committed action.
Somatic Body Based Therapy
Somatic practices bring awareness to the connection between the mind and the body, in particular the body’s response to trauma, in order to release stored tension, and process unresolved experiences.
Art and Expressive Therapy
The arts can be a safe and enjoyable way for clients to express themselves and for those who enjoy being creative or find it difficult to articulate their emotions.

Questions About Trauma Therapy
Do I need to talk about my trauma to heal?
What is the difference between Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)?
How will therapy help me to cope with trauma triggers?
Therapy can help with coping with trauma triggers by providing a variety of tools and support to understand and manage the often intense emotional and physical reactions triggered by past traumatic events.
Why do I still react strongly to things that remind me of a past trauma?
Trauma memories can remain active in the nervous system long after an event has passed. Certain sounds, situations, or emotions can trigger the brain’s threat response, leading to anxiety, fear, or strong emotional reactions. Trauma therapy helps people process these experiences safely and develop tools to regulate their nervous system.
How do I know if what I experienced was trauma?
Many people question whether their experience “counts” as trauma. Trauma is less about the event itself and more about how the nervous system experienced it. If something left you feeling overwhelmed, unsafe, or continues to affect your emotions, relationships, or sense of safety, it may be helpful to explore it with a therapist.
Why do I feel like my trauma wasn’t “bad enough” to count?
Many people question whether their experiences “count” as trauma. Trauma isn’t defined by the severity of the event, but by how it affected your nervous system and your ability to cope. Even experiences that seem small to others can cause lasting emotional, physical, or psychological impact. Feeling this way is common, and therapy can help validate your experiences, reduce guilt or shame, and support healing on your terms.
Why do I remember some parts of trauma clearly but other parts are missing?
Memory gaps are a common part of trauma. The brain sometimes blocks or fragments memories of overwhelming events as a protective mechanism. You may recall certain details vividly while other parts feel blank or fuzzy. This doesn’t mean your experience wasn’t real. Trauma therapy provides a safe space to explore memories, process emotions, and integrate fragmented experiences at a pace that feels safe for you.
Why do I feel numb or disconnected after trauma?
Emotional numbness can be a protective response when the brain is overwhelmed. Some people feel detached from their emotions, memories, or even from their body. Trauma therapy can help people gradually reconnect with their emotions in a safe and supportive way.
Why do trauma experiences affect my relationships now?
Trauma can shape how people experience trust, safety, and emotional closeness. Some people become guarded or avoid conflict, while others may feel easily triggered in relationships. Therapy can help individuals understand these patterns and develop healthier ways of connecting with others.
How will I know if trauma therapy is helping?
Healing from trauma is a process, and it may take time to notice significant changes. You will know that your relationship with your trauma is improving when you begin to experience a reduction of physical symptoms, are able to regulate your emotions more easily, and have less intrusive thoughts, memories and triggers.
