Our family life is fundamental to our emotional health and personal growth.
A family could include parents and children (teens or adults), grandparents, siblings, step-parents and others who care about each other. In therapy, family members are able to explore difficult thoughts and feelings, to make space for each other’s differing experiences and needs, to build on strengths, and to make beneficial changes to support relationships.

It takes courage to do family therapy.
We are not given a handbook on how to have honest and open conversations and manage challenging circumstances or conflict. Your therapist will help you understand specific relational patterns in your family interactions and the role intergenerational trauma may play.
Through family therapy you will:
- Better understand one another
- Identify the impact of your behaviours
- Increase empathy and compassion
- Learn new ways of listening and responding
- Improve interpersonal problem solving
- Learn emotional self regulation
- Create a shared vision for your relationship and future

Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT)
For families with teens or young adults, we may recommend the Attachment Based Family Therapy Model (ABFT). Attachment Based Family Therapy offers family based mental health care to assist with improving the mental health of adolescents and young adults. ABFT is an empirically based, attachment, and trauma informed practice. This emotion focused model of therapy focuses on rebuilding a sense of connection and trust, improving communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and repairing ruptures in the child and parent relationship/s. A family commitment of between 14-20 sessions is required.
